WILLIMANTIC, Maine — The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a bizarre theft that involved not only valuable cameras and change, but also shampoo and shower gel.

An Elliotsville Road couple, who came home from work late Friday night, noticed their air-conditioning unit in a window was crooked but the home appeared to be untouched, according to Investigator Guy Dow of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.

Dow said that when the couple went to retrieve a camera to take on a trip Saturday they discovered the camera and two others were missing. They also noticed that a change container was empty. Then on Saturday night, they discovered that someone had taken shampoo and shower gel from their bathroom, he said.

Upon investigation, Dow said, he found entry was gained through a window that held a fan in the kitchen area. The burglar apparently had planned to enter the house through the window with the air-conditioner unit but instead used the kitchen window. The fan had been replaced in the window upside down.

That the theft involved shampoo and shower gel led Dow to believe it might have been campers in the nearby campground. He found no one at the campground when he arrived but was told by residents in the area that there had been campers there earlier.
