MACHIAS, Maine — Machias Savings Bank President Ed Hennessey announced Friday that the bank has contributed $20,000 to Sunrise County Economic Council for its 2009 Annual Fundraising Campaign.
“SCEC is a vital resource for businesses and communities across Washington County,” Hennessey said. “We are very proud to support an organization that is committed to long-range economic and community investment like SCEC is.”
The council has set a goal of $73,000 for this year’s campaign and will receive $15,000 in matching funds from the C.F. Adams Charitable Trust if it raises at least that much in first-time or increased contributions. The campaign will run through Oct. 31.
“Machias Savings Bank has been a strong ally over the years,” SCEC board Chairman Ed Plissey said. “Its board and staff have offered countless hours of technical assistance, advice and support for our initiatives. Mr. Hennessey and his staff are firmly committed to the long-term health of our economy and believe in the grass-roots approach that SCEC takes.”
Council Executive Director Harold Clossey said the organization has helped usher in over $220 million in investment dollars in recent years.
“There are a lot of reasons for investing in SCEC,” Clossey said. “The economy may be down, but we can’t stop working to make it better. SCEC has helped bring commercial scale wind power to the county. We’ve worked with officials from the Port of Eastport to diversify their facility and bring rail back to the county. We’ve co-sponsored the county’s first alternative energy expo slated for this fall in Machias. And we’ve supported rural broadband access for the entire county. These things are only possible because of strong supporters like MSB and because we have a strong network of community collaborators and partners. In short, we don’t do this alone.”
