FORT KENT, Maine — A fire Friday evening at a Maine Public Service Co. substation knocked electrical service out to an estimated 6,000 customers in northern Aroostook County.

The outage began about 6:30 p.m., when a fire of undetermined cause began at the utility’s Fish River substation, the utility’s manager of system operations said Friday night.

Though service was restored to about 4,000 customers in two-thirds of Fort Kent and the Madawaska, Frenchville and New Sweden areas within less than half an hour, customers from Allagash to Winterville weren’t expected to have their power back on until late Friday or early Saturday.

A customer service employee at Maine Public’s office in Presque Isle said Friday evening that a repair crew was en route to Fort Kent to install a mobile substation.
