Belmont man killed in motorcycle crash

By Walter Griffin

SEARSMONT, Maine — A Belmont motorcyclist was killed following a Thursday night accident where he lost control of his bike, fell to the pavement and was run over by an oncoming van.

Jared W. Enos, 23, of Lincolnville Road was taken by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor following the 8:30 p.m. accident and died at 2 a.m. Friday, Waldo County Chief Deputy Robert Keating said.

Enos was riding a 2000 Suzuki 125 northbound on the Howard Road at a high rate of speed when he encountered a 2001 Dodge driven by Kyle White, 17, of Searsmont in the same lane of travel. Enos locked up the bike’s brakes to avoid the collision and went into a uncontrolled skid that threw him to the ground. Frank M. Herz, 73, of New York City was coming in the opposite direction in a 2003 Dodge van and was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting Enos.

“Mr. Herz saw cars slowing down, but by the time he saw Mr. Enos in the road he was unable to stop in time,” Keating said Friday.

Keating said Enos was not wearing a helmet. He was riding an unregistered off-road dirt bike that was not equipped with head or tail lights. Sunset was at 7:44 p.m. on Thursday.

Riding with Herz was his wife Ruth, 70, of New York. Riding with White were Sara Drinkwater, 20, of Northport and Christopher Kenney, 19, address unknown.

Keating said Sgt. Dale Brown and Deputy James Greeley were handling the investigation and Deputy Ben Seekins would conduct the accident reconstruction.

Although the accident remains under investigation, “the preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Enos may have been going too fast,” Keating said.

Searsmont Rescue and Belfast Ambulance responded to the incident.
