PORTLAND, Maine — A trial is under way in Maine for a 27-year-old woman charged with causing the death of an infant boy who’d been in her care.

Shawna Poulin is charged with manslaughter in the death of 2-month-old Kobin Freeman, who died from a severe head injury. Poulin’s lawyer says the infant was fine when the boy was returned to his mother, and suggested that the mom may have caused the injury.

Aryne Freeman of South Portland testified Wednesday that she left her son with Poulin on Nov. 24, 2006, so she and her husband Rick could have a housewarming party.

She says her son appeared lifeless except for a flutter of his eyelids after Poulin dropped him off the following morning. She called 911 and the boy was pronounced dead.
