Pittsfield Woman OK After Waldo Rollover

By Walter Griffin

A Pittsfield woman escaped serious injury when her sport utility vehicle rolled over five times before coming to rest on its wheels and bursting into flames Tuesday morning. “She was very lucky,” Waldo County Deputy Sheriff Gene Rega said of 19-year-old Erin Elizabeth Rice. “Had she gone unconscious in one of those rolls it would have been a fatality,” he said. Rice, who was wearing a seat belt, managed to get out of the 2005 Jeep Liberty without being burned. She was taken by Belfast Ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital complaining of hip pain. The accident occurred on Route 131 in Waldo at 8:15 a.m. when Rice, who was headed north, drifted onto the shoulder and overcorrected when she tried to get back on the pavement, causing the SUV to roll over. The Waldo Fire Department extinguished the fire.
