SHIRLEY, Maine — A Massachusetts motorcyclist was seriously injured early Wednesday evening when he lost control of his bike on a sharp curve on Route 15.

James McGinnis, 54, of Dedham. Mass., suffered massive head, internal and upper torso injuries, according to Investigator Dave Wilson of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department. The officer said McGinnis was not wearing a helmet when the 6 p.m. accident occurred.

McGinnis was taken by ambulance to Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville where he was stabilized and then airlifted by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Wilson said witnesses reported that McGinnis had been traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when he left the roadway once and recovered, then lost control again. His body was thrown 285 feet and his Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveled 330 feet, Wilson said. The bike was demolished.

McGinnis and a couple of friends who also were traveling on motorcycles had visited in Greenville for a few days and were returning home when the accident occurred, Wilson said.
