PERRY, Maine — Brian Clark, 32, of Eastport was critically injured Tuesday night when his car apparently failed to stop at a stop sign at the end of Route 190, crossed U.S. Route 1 and slammed into a stone ledge.
Washington County Deputy John Preston said it appeared that Clark “never stepped on his brakes. I believe that alcohol was involved.” Preston declined to elaborate on what led him to conclude that alcohol was involved.
Clark had to be cut from the mangled vehicle, a late model Chevrolet, said Preston. Clark was wearing a seat belt.
Preston said Clark has a lengthy record of motor vehicle violations in both Maine and Florida, and was operating his vehicle under a Florida license.
Once Clark was freed from his car, he was taken to Calais Regional Hospital and then transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Preston said he was assisted at the accident by the Eastport, Pleasant Point and Perry fire departments.
He said the crash remains under investigation.
