PARIS, Maine — A Maine state police affidavit indicates a double-murder in Rumford may have been retribution over an assault on the girlfriend of one of the defendants.

Eric Hamel, 19, and Richard Moulton, 20, both from the town of Mexico, made their initial appearances on Monday in Oxford County Superior Court.

They were charged Friday with the killings of Victor Sheldon and Roger Day earlier in the week at a house Day was renting. Hamel and Moulton are being held without bail.

The affidavit by Detective John Hainey indicates Hamel and Moulton were seeking revenge because Sheldon allegedly assaulted his estranged girlfriend, who had begun dating Moulton.
