Baldacci repeats vow: No new taxes

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci says state revenues are continuing to decline, but he is repeating his vow to not raise taxes to balance the budget.

In his weekly radio address Saturday, Baldacci said the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee is working with his administration on coming up with ways to further reduce state spending.

He said the state must make find additional cost savings through efficiency and restructuring while maintaining core services and a safety net for those in need.

When the recession ends and a recovery comes, Baldacci said Maine government will be leaner and more efficient and competitive.
