RUMFORD — A former high school honor student was one of two young men arrested Friday on charges of murdering two local men, police said.

Eric Joseph Hamel, 19, was arrested on two counts of murder after being interviewed by detectives, and Richard Moulton, 20, was arrested on the same charges later in the day, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Moulton was originally identified as a witness who alerted police after the shooting before he became a suspect, McCausland said.

Moulton and Hamel are from the town of Mexico. Hamel was an honor student who graduated in June from Mountain Valley High School, the Lewiston Sun Journal newspaper reported.

The victims, Roger Leroy Day Jr., 48, and Victor Reed Sheldon, 22, were shot in the head Monday night in Day’s rented house, police said.

The arrests came a day after police searched the rapids of the Androscoggin River for evidence that might have been dropped off Memorial Bridge.

McCausland declined to say who pulled the trigger or whether a weapon was recovered. Investigators also declined to discuss any motive for the shootings.

Moulton was initially believed to have been a bystander. Detectives now believe he was in the home with the men when Hamel arrived and stayed after the shootings to call police, McCausland said.
