PORTLAND, Maine — The family of a man who was fatally shot by South Portland police has dropped its wrongful-death lawsuit against the city’s police department and two officers.

The family of Donald Gray, who was killed at his parents’ home in November 2006 by the officers, sued last year in federal court.

Gray, who was 40, was shot after his parents called police following an argument. Police said Gray ignored orders to put down his pistol and they each shot four times when he pointed the weapon at one of them.

Herbert and Jackie Gray’s attorney tells the Portland Press Herald that the couple still blames police for their son’s death, but decided to drop the case for personal reasons. An attorney general’s investigation ruled that the officers actions were justified.
