FALMOUTH, Maine — The widening of the Maine Turnpike to six lanes through Greater Portland from Scarborough to Falmouth has been put off for five years.

The project was supposed to begin next year, but turnpike officials say declining traffic and toll revenues forced them to put on the brakes.

Spokesman Dan Paradee tells the Portland Press Herald that the project remains part of the 10-year plan. Whether the widening takes place will depend on traffic volume.

By the end of last year, the number of vehicle miles traveled on the highway had dropped to 2002 levels, and this year travel is declining further.
