Barn fire in Monson deemed suspicious

By Dawn Gagnon, BDN Staff

MONSON, Maine — Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office have been asked to help pinpoint the cause of a fire Tuesday that damaged part of a two-story barn.

Monson Fire Chief Eric Melia said the fire at 18 Water St. began shortly before 3:30 p.m. in a barn attached to a two-story house that has been unoccupied for some time, he said, adding that he believed that the property might have been foreclosed upon.

It was not clear Tuesday whether the barn was insured. One reason the fire is considered suspicious is that there was no electrical power running to the buildings.

Melia said about dozen firefighters from Monson put out the fire within 10 minutes. Members of the Guilford Fire Department remained on standby in Monson during the incident.

Though members of the Sangerville Fire Department were dispatched, they were released after the fire was brought under control, Melia said.

He said that no one was injured during the incident and that the state fire investigators are expected to examine the scene today.
