BANGOR, Maine — A convicted sex offender who was arrested by Brewer police for assault on Thursday evening, was arrested for criminal threatening by Bangor officers on Sunday.

Joseph Webber, 41, was arrested for domestic assault around 7:35 p.m. July 23 at a Wilson Street hotel after he slapped a pregnant woman staying at the hotel, Brewer police Sgt. David Lord said Tuesday. Webber also was charged for violating his bail conditions, Lord said.

Three days later, Webber was at the Acadia Recovery Community on Indiana Avenue in Bangor when he told a female staying at the facility, which provides shelter and substance abuse treatment services to homeless people, “that he would set her sleeping bag on fire,” Bangor police Sgt. Ed Potter said Tuesday.

While being questioned by Bangor police at about 9 p.m. Sunday, Webber also gave a false name. He was charged with criminal threatening, violating his bail conditions, failure to provide correct name and date of birth, and for failing to comply with Maine Sex Offender Registry rules.

“One condition of [his] release is that he must comply with the sex offender registry,” Potter said, adding that Webber failed to report to the state that he was living in the Bangor area. The address listed for Webber on Tuesday on the Maine Sex Offender Registry Web site was Mariaville.

According to the registry Web site, Webber was convicted in February 1993 in Superior Court in Ellsworth of five counts of unlawful sexual contact with a juvenile under the age of 14 and was sentenced to two years in prison.

If convicted of the Class B crime for not updating his status with the sex offender registry, Webber would face a penalty of up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $20,000. After Bangor police arrested Webber he was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained on Tuesday night, a jail official said.
