Maine woman’s channel swim must wait until 2011

The Associated Press

WESTBROOK, Maine — A Westbrook, Maine, woman’s attempt to swim the English Channel must wait until 2011.

Pat Gallant-Charette, 58, had hoped to do the challenging swim from Dover, England to Calais, France. But she was unable to because of bad weather conditions.

Her son, Tom Charette, told the Portland Press Herald the winds were blowing at about 15 mph.

Swimmer’s attempts are regulated by the English Channel Association. Gallant-Charette’s window of opportunity was set to expire Thursday, but she was granted an extension.

Last year, Gallant-Charette was within two miles of crossing the channel. That swim was called off because of a riptide that kept her in place for four hours.

Gallant-Charette’s son said she has already made plans to try again in 2011.
