BANGOR, Maine — An Edinburg man was indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury for setting his house on fire in January.

Ty Ewer, 32, is scheduled to be arraigned on the arson charge on Aug. 25 in Penobscot County Superior Court.

Ewer’s two-story gambrel house at 691 Edinburg Road was destroyed on Jan. 28. He allegedly told Howland firefighters that he had been in the house several hours before the blaze was reported about 7:21 p.m.

A foot of snow that fell the day before the fire impeded firefighters’ progress, Howland Fire Chief Phil Dawson told the Bangor Daily News the day after the fire.

About 30 firefighters fought the blaze, with crews from the Passadumkeag and Seboeis volunteer fire departments assisting Howland.

The initial 911 caller reported fire coming through the walls, but when firefighters arrived, the roof had started to collapse.

Ewer, who was not home when firefighters arrived, allegedly told firefighters that he split his time between his house and his girlfriend’s house.

No one was injured in the fire.

Information about a possible motive for the arson was not available Monday from the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office.
