LINCOLN, Maine — If Alan Dill wants to sell a new product at his Movie America store on Main Street, his first stop is the Lincoln Referral Group, he said Monday.

That’s a group of about a dozen Lincoln Lakes region businesses that exists to do what its name implies: refer area businesspeople looking to buy or sell products and services to other businesspeople looking to buy or sell those products.

“It helps our businesses grow,” said group member Ann Albro, owner of Globe Printing Inc. of 39A Main St. “Not only do we do work for the other people in the group, we also keep our ears open for anything else they might need. If they [group members] were looking for a specific thing I don’t do, I would send them to the referral group member before I would send them anywhere else.”

Dill, who is interested in selling furniture and arts and crafts at his store, made contact with an Enfield craftsman through the group, he said.

The group meets at 7:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the new Health Access Network building’s conference room on West Broadway, Albro said. Since Health Access Network’s new building has opened, the health care center has been allowing nonprofit community groups to meet there.

Referral groups are common in larger cities and towns, but Lincoln hadn’t had one in recent years.

The group is about a year old and its meetings follow a simple format. Members have a minute to introduce themselves and their businesses and discuss their needs, Dill said. Most meetings last about an hour.

To boost membership, the Lincoln Referral Group will hold its annual open house breakfast at Gilmor’s Restaurant at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 4. The breakfast is free and by invitation only. Business owners interested in joining the group or attending the breakfast may call group member Maryann Johnson of Lincoln Financial Center at 852-4818.

“Nobody is making a profit off running the group,” Dill said. “It’s just individuals working to help their businesses and the local economy and to keep the dollars local.”
