Tournament pushed back due to rain

BANGOR, Maine — Friday’s rain forced postponement of Day 2 of the American Legion Zone 1 baseball tournament and prompted minor revisions in the four-team, double-elimination phase of the event scheduled to continue this weekend at the Winkin Baseball Complex on the campus of Husson University.

Two games scheduled for Friday, No. 2 Hampden (15-5) against No. 3 Bangor (16-5) and No. 1 Brewer (15-5) against No. 4 Steamboat Petroleum of Waldo County (15-6) have been rescheduled for Saturday afternoon, according to Zone 1 commissioner David Paul.

The Hampden-Bangor game is set for noon, followed by the Brewer-Steamboat Petroleum game at 4.

That will be followed by an elimination game at 7 p.m. between the losers of Saturday’s first two games.

Sunday’s schedule begins with a winner’s bracket game at noon between the winners of Saturday’s first two games.

The winner of this contest will be the first of two teams from Zone 1 to earn a berth to the state tournament, which begins next Wednesday at Augusta.

That will be followed at 4 p.m. by an elimination game between the winner of Saturday’s third game and the loser of Sunday’s first contest — a game that will determine the second state tournament qualifier from Zone 1.

The championship round will follow either Sunday night or Monday evening to determine which team enters the state tournament as zone champion and which team is the runner-up.

When that championship round would begin is uncertain, Paul said, because under Legion rules no team can play more than two games in a day.

Conceivably, the loser of Sunday’s winner’s bracket game could then come back and win the 4 p.m. elimination game. Under that scenario, that team could not play a third game Sunday night, and thus the championship round would begin Monday.

If the survivor of Sunday’s 4 p.m. game had played just once that day, a championship-round game would be held at 7 p.m. Sunday night.

Because Zone 1 will be the only zone to advance its runnerup directly to the state tournament next week under the five-zone, eight-team format that sends just one second-place team to the states on a rotating basis beginning this year, two play-in games involving runners-up from the other four zones are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in Augusta.

One play-in game will have Zone 2 runner-up Waterville (12-8) against Zone 4 runner-up Libby-Mitchell Post of South Portland and Scarborough (15-5). The other contest will match the Zone 3 runner-up, either Bessey Motors of South Paris (14-6) or Smith-Tobey Post of Bath (14-6), against Zone 5 runner-up Kennebunk (13-7).

Bessey Motors and Smith-Tobey were scheduled to meet at Bath on Friday for the Zone 3 title, with the loser moving on to the play-in game.

Teams that already have qualified for this year’s state tournament are Zone 2 champion Gardiner (13-5), Zone 4 champion Nova Seafood of Portland (17-3) and Zone 5 champion Advanced Technology of Biddeford (16-4).

Nova Seafood, made up of players from Deering High School in Portland, is the defending state champion.
