WALTHAM, Maine — Police are investigating the causes of an accident Wednesday night that claimed the life of an Eastbrook man.

George E. Taylor, 51, was at the wheel of a 1996 Oldsmobile headed north on Route 179 when the vehicle went off the road at 9:30 p.m., according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Taylor, the only occupant of the vehicle, died of multiple injuries at the accident scene, according to Lt. Tim Cote of the Sheriff’s Department.

After Taylor “failed to negotiate a slight curve in the road,” the car veered across the opposite lane of traffic and struck a utility pole, Cote wrote in a prepared statement about the accident. The car rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof, Cote indicated.

The car went off the road where Webb Brook runs under the highway, just north of a dairy farm in Waltham village. Dispatch reports with other responding agencies indicated that the car may have struck the bridge over the stream before going into the water.

The Sheriff’s Department declined to release information about the possible causes of the accident, which remains under investigation. State law requires investigators to perform toxicology tests on drivers involved in fatal accidents.

Wednesday’s fatal accident brought power lines down in the road, which caused safety concerns and prompted responding fire departments to ask Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. to cut power to the area. The power company could not do so remotely, according to dispatch reports, but was able to get a truck to the scene in a few minutes to cut power to the downed cables while emergency responders dealt with the accident.

According to the Sheriff’s Department release, fire departments from Eastbrook, Ellsworth and Waltham assisted at the accident scene, as did County Ambulance. Deputy Rob Morang is the primary officer investigating the accident, which is being reconstructed by Deputy Jeff McFarland, the release indicated.
