Blue Dogs enjoy power surge on health care issue

AUGUSTA, Maine — U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud of Maine, who’s aligned himself with the Blue Dog Democrats, is applauding President Obama for making a strong case for health care reform during Obama’s prime-time news conference.

The conservative-leaning Blue Dog Democrats are enjoying a power surge, forcing the president and their own party leaders to deal with their demands for cost cuts and tax restraints in overhauling health care.

In a statement Thursday, Michaud said he supports Obama’s goals of passing comprehensive health care reform that’s deficit-neutral and that lowers costs for families and businesses, and increases the quality of care.

Maine’s 2nd District representative said Congress should not leave Washington for its August break if that’s what it takes to get a good health care reform package passed.
