BENNINGTON, Vt. – Thomas J. Lapointe Jr., 88, passed away peacefully July 19, 2009, at Vermont Veterans Home, Bennington, Vt. Tom was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Van Buren, the last of five children born to Thomas J. and Amanda (Gagnon) Lapointe Sr. Mr. Lapointe was a graduate of Van Buren High School and attended Ricker College, adding ski jumping to his lifelong love of skiing, which led directly to his enlistment in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division – ski troops, in 1942. During World War II, Tom saw action on the Aleutian Islands, and also in the PoValley and the Apennines Mountains of Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star along with other military honors. After the war, he began working at Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, as a civil engineer and then later moved with his family to Exeter, N.H., and continued at Pease Air Force Base, Portsmouth, N.H., until his retirement 35 years later in 1982. For the next 20 years, Tom and Adrinette devoted themselves to improving their golf game in Ellenton, Fla., before moving to Vermont in October 2007. He was the beloved and adored husband of 61 devoted years to Adrinette; the loving father of John and his wife, Linda, of Manchester, Vt., Patrick and his friend, Kay, of Fort Myers, Fla.; and the cherished grandfather of Jamie, all of whom will forever miss his kindness and sense of humor. A Mass of Christian death will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at Sacred Heart-St. Francis de Sales Church, Bennington, Vt.
