Lawyer: Deputies behaved like ‘cowboys’

PORTLAND, Maine — The lawyer for a Maine man who was shot by deputies who surrounded his home says they had no right to use the tactics they did.

The Portland Press Herald reports Thomas Hallett says deputies caused the situation to escalate by acting like “cowboys” with SWAT team tactics that were unwarranted, and unlawful.

Douglas Tenczar was shot after he allegedly aimed a shotgun in the direction officers in October in the town of Sebago. Hallett says the deputies didn’t identify themselves when they arrived to question him about a road rage incident in which he allegedly showed a gun.

Tenczar was hit with multiple shots and eventually lost his right arm. Hallett argued Thursday to suppress statements and evidence from his trial for criminal threatening with a firearm.
