Newly appointed Husson University head football coach Niles Nelson has named Bruce Morse and Shawn Demaray to his coaching staff.

Both had been coaching at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. Morse had been an assistant for the past six years and Demaray concluded his first season last fall.

MMA went 7-4 last fall and reached the New England Football Conference championship game.

Morse, a 1970 University of Maine graduate, also has been the head coach at MMA as well as at Bucksport High School and at Bangor High.

Morse will be the defensive coordinator, replacing Nelson, and Demaray, a 2007 UMaine graduate, will be the offensive line coach. Demaray was a starting guard before becoming a starting offensive tackle at Maine.

“I’ve known Bruce for 30 years, way back when he was the head coach at MMA,” said Nelson. “And I think we played him when he was the head coach at Bucksport and I was at Orono.

“He’s a good person, first of all,” added Nelson. “He’s a genuine person who knows his football. He’s a very thoughtful guy who will relate well to the players. He knows both sides of the ball. He’s going to make a heck of a coach.”

In addition to his coordinator duties, Nelson said Morse probably would inherit his former duties as linebackers coach.

Nelson said Demaray possesses many of the same qualities as Morse.

“He’s a good person and a genuine person. The players will relate well to him. He knows what he’s doing,” said Nelson. “He doesn’t put on any airs.”

Demaray was a third team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection his senior year.

Demaray said he was “very excited” about his new position.

“The athletic staff has been very welcoming and there’s a good environment,” said Demaray, a native of Livermore Falls.

He said he will stress “effort and technique.”

Nelson replaced seven-year head coach Gabby Price recently after Price resigned.

The Eagles went 7-3 last season and earned a berth in the ECAC Division III Northeast Bowl.

Nelson said offensive line coach Nat Clark and offensive backfield coach Nate Quirion won’t return.
