A national survey of state government Web sites has given Maine the No. 1 ranking in e-government performance.

The survey evaluated state Web sites in the areas of content, privacy, usability, service and citizen participation. It was conducted jointly by Rutgers University in Newark, N.J., and San Francisco State University.

Maine was given the top score nationally, followed by Oregon and Utah.

Maine’s Web site, www.maine.gov, was created by the Maine legislature in 1998 and began operating a year later.
