Governor marks anniversary of Web site

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — It may seem like it was a long time ago, but it was only 10 years ago that Maine’s official Web site was launched.

Gov. John Baldacci joined Monday in celebrating the 10th anniversary of maine.gov, an e-government initiative created by the Maine Legislature in 1998. The Information Resource of Maine, known as “InforME,” took responsibility for operating the Web site a year later.

Some of the more than 400 online services offered through Maine.gov include online vehicle registration; the ability to purchase hunting and fishing licenses; and professional license renewal.

Baldacci said online services bring convenience to residents, encourage participation in government and create efficiencies that save money for taxpayers.
