PORTLAND, Maine — Sen. Susan Collins says $4.8 million in federal funding has been approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee for continued offshore wind research at the University of Maine.

Collins said the funding was approved Thursday and is included in the 2010 Energy and Water Appropriations bill that will go to the full Senate for consideration.

Collins said the money will go toward the Maine Offshore Wind Initiative at the university. She said she is particularly excited about a proposal to establish a National Center for Deepwater Offshore Wind Research at the school, located in Orono.

Researchers there are exploring the feasibility of building wind turbines in ocean waters far offshore, on floating platforms in waters hundreds of feet deep.
