MACHIAS, Machias — Mike Hinerman, Washington County’s Emergency Management director, was out and about the county Thursday morning looking at road damage — washouts, erosion and crumbling pavement.

The nonstop rain has irrevocably damaged many county roads and Hinerman is hoping each town will submit an assessment of damage so the county can reach the federal threshold for reimbursement.

“I’m confident we will make it,” he said. The threshold is $100,000 in damage and as of Thursday, with just two towns reporting in, the tally was already at $90,000.

Hinerman said he had notified each of the county’s towns and cities by e-mail to report individual damage. “There is plenty of damage around,” he said. “I saw some just this morning in Machiasport.”

In Machias, the Board of Selectmen voted Wednesday night to close Grove Street to traffic because of water damage, and just a few feet from Hinerman’s office a barricade blocks part of Center Street, where a hole has opened up in the pavement.

Machias Town Manager Betsy Fitzgerald told selectmen that if the county doesn’t meet the $100,000 threshold, the community will have to come up with repair funding.

Hinerman said communities should report damage accumulated from June 19 to July 8 as soon as possible.

Once the threshold is met, Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives will come to Washington County and take a look at the damage.
