BREWER, Maine — The Environmental Protection Agency plans to begin a three- to four-month cleanup next week at the lead-contaminated Rolnick Site along the Penobscot River in Brewer.

The EPA hopes to remove lead-polluted soil and stabilize the shoreline on the 4-acre parcel once occupied by both an auto salvage shop and a gas station. Officials say the lead poses a threat to people and fish in the Penobscot River.

The EPA said it will monitor the air throughout the project to ensure that dust stirred up at the work site doesn’t threaten workers.
