‘Hefty’ safe stolen in break-in at Greenville insurance office

GREENVILLE, Maine — A large safe was taken Sunday night during a burglary at the Varney Agency on Pritham Avenue, police said.

Police Chief Scott MacMaster said entry into the insurance business was gained through a side door that was forced open. The safe, which was about 4 feet high and 24-30 inches wide, and a camera were taken from the business.

“It was a pretty hefty safe,” MacMaster said Tuesday. He said the safe contained unused business checks and about $50 in cash.

An attempted break-in also was reported at Harris Drug Store on Pritham Avenue the same night, MacMaster said. In that incident, a window on the second floor was “popped open,” but the building was never entered, he said. It appeared that the burglars either used a ladder or jumped up on a vehicle to reach the window, MacMaster said.

He said physical evidence was collected at the Varney break-in and has been submitted to the Maine State Police crime laboratory for analysis.

Anyone who may have seen any activity around either building on Sunday night is urged to contact the Greenville Police Department at 695-3835.
