NORTH BERWICK, Maine — Two people were killed in a house fire early Sunday morning in North Berwick.

Twenty-eight-year-old Greg Givens, who lived at the home, was killed, along with 23-year-old Nicole Gagne of Sanford, Sgt. Ken Grimes of the state Fire Marshal’s Office told Foster’s Daily Democrat.

Two other people in the house managed to escape. They were treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital and released.

Officials say the fire apparently started in the kitchen but investigators don’t know yet what caused it. The house had smoke detectors, but authorities said they did not appear to be working.
