GUILFORD, Maine — Lightning struck a Guilford home early Friday morning, causing extensive damage.

The lightning either struck an outside steel fence and went through the home owned by Francis Limoges and came back outside, where it heavily damaged a telephone transmission box, or it struck the transmission box and followed the telephone lines into the home, according to Guilford Fire Chief Allen Emerson. Either way, it damaged both the house and the telephone line, he said.

The Limoges family was in bed when the lightning struck the home at about 1:30 a.m., Emerson said. No one was injured, but the strike damaged both sides of the house, which is located at the intersection of Guilford Center Road and Wharf Road, he said.

When Guilford firefighters arrived, Emerson said there was no visible fire, but the home and cellar were filled with smoke.

Sangerville firefighters assisted Guilford firefighters at the scene. Dover-Foxcroft firefighters remained on standby at their station.
