Due to unusually high water levels, the American Canoe Association Whitewater Canoe Downriver Championships and Kayak Downriver National Championships races have been moved.
The rivers and courses have changed, but the four-day national championship event’s races are still being held in West Forks today through Sunday. Due to extensive rains for the last month, the races have been moved from the lower Dead River to the Kennebec River in West Forks.
The change means the 12.6-mile course will now be nearly 7 miles in length, from Carry Brook to the ball field in West Forks. The location of the sprints races will be either the East Outlet of the Kennebec at Moosehead Lake or on the Dead River from Salmon Stream to Route 201 at the Magic Falls takeout.
The schedule has remained unchanged with the open canoe (OC) two-person mixed races today, the sprint races on Friday, the OC1 men’s and OC2 women’s races Saturday, and the OC1 women’s and OC2 men’s races Sunday. All racing action will still be starting around noon each day.
