BANGOR, Maine — Niles Nelson will replace Gabby Price as a head football coach for the second time in his coaching career.

The 71-year-old Nelson, who once replaced Price at Bangor High School, is taking over the head coaching job at Husson University from Price, who resigned two weeks ago after seven seasons on the Bangor campus.

Nelson brings a wealth of experience and a strong educational background to the job. After earning a Ph.D. in physical education from Florida State University, Nelson went on to coach at The Citadel, the University of Rhode Island, Nichols College and Methodist College. He was also Kennebunkport High School’s athletic director and an administrator in the Bangor school system.

Nelson, who has been Husson’s defensive coordinator for the last five years, does not expect his promotion to signal a significant change in coaching philosophy.

“My first priority is to win, and win with attitude,” he said. “That means a positive attitude, not a bad one.”

Nelson also led Orono High School’s football team to three unbeaten seasons, three state titles and a 38-game win streak from 1978 through 1980.
