BANGOR, Maine — Karen Cole was appointed acting director of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, effective July 1. The executive committee made the announcement in a press release late Wednesday afternoon.

Cole replaces Candace B. Guerette, who had been Chamber director since July 1996.

Cole joined the Chamber’s staff two months ago when she accepted the post of communications and marketing director.

Before that, she served as business manager for the University of Maine School of Performing Arts and earlier as marketing director for the Bangor Mall. Cole is married to state Transportation Commissioner David Cole.

The executive committee, which includes seven voting members from the Chamber’s board of directors, will present a plan to recruit and identify a new president and CEO at its July meeting, according to the press release.

“We look forward to filling this important position with a strong and effective advocate and leader for our members and our region,” said John Diamond, board chairman, in the release.

Contacted late Wednesday afternoon, Diamond said he could not release any details about Guerette’s departure, including what her future plans might be.

Guerette could not be reached for comment early Wednesday evening.

Before her appointment as Chamber director, Guerette was town manager of Orrington from 1990 until 1996, according to previous BDN stories.

Established in 1911, the Chamber represents more than 800 member organizations, most of which are located in Bangor and the 20 surrounding municipalities.
