Heavy rains put Maine clams in short supply

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine clams are in short supply.

Most of the state’s clam flats have been closed since Monday because of pollution concerns due to the runoff from heavy rains, leaving clam diggers out in the cold.

Chad Coffin, a Freeport clam digger and president of the Maine Clammers Association, told the Portland Press Herald that it’s hard to find Maine clams anywhere in the state right now.

Some seafood dealers are bringing in clams from southern New England and Canada, but those likely will cost more than Maine clams.

Forecasts for more rain and the appearance of red tide algae mean some clam flats might not be reopening any time soon.
