ELLSWORTH, Maine — One person was killed and another seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 1A Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened at about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, according to Lt. Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department. Officers from the department were reconstructing the accident early Wednesday evening and details of the crash were limited.

The identities of the two drivers had not been released at that time.

According to Page, a Chevy pickup truck was headed south on Route 1A near Cove Way when it crossed the centerline and struck a Chevy Malibu.

The driver of the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck was trapped in the vehicle, which was on its side after the crash. Rescue workers from the Ellsworth Fire Department cut the roof off the pickup to remove him from the vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. His injuries were considered serious but there was no report on his condition.

Initial reports that one of the vehicles caught fire were not confirmed. Officers at the scene said bystanders used a fire extinguisher and water on one of the vehicles, but were unsure whether the vehicle had been on fire, Page said.

Traffic was backed up in both directions on Route 1A for several hours as officers worked to reconstruct the accident.
