FARMINGTON, Maine — A former South Portland man has been found guilty of murder in the stabbing death of Judith Flagg in her Fayette home 26 years ago.

The Franklin County jury deliberated for about 90 minutes Tuesday before returning its verdict against 52-year-old Thomas Mitchell Jr.

The Kennebec Journal said more than 100 people packed the Farmington courtroom for closing arguments, and many remained to hear the verdict.

Mitchell testified Monday that he was in South Portland with his aunt on Jan. 6, 1983, the day Flagg was killed. He was charged with the murder in 2006 after testing on old evidence revealed the presence of his DNA.

Mitchell faces between 25 years and life. At the time of his arrest, he was completing prison sentences for kidnapping, gross sexual assault and attempted murder.
