A small number of voters in Alton, Bradley and Old Town turned out on Tuesday to approve a $16.6 million budget for the first operational year of RSU 34, the new school unit the three towns formed earlier this year.
The votes in favor in each town were: Alton, 16-2; Bradley, 20-5; and Old Town, 116-46.
The RSU will take effect July 1, replacing the Old Town School District and a portion of School Union 90, of which Alton and Bradley were formerly members. Voters in Greenbush and Milford, which also belonged to Union 90, voted not to join the new RSU and are operating as individual school districts.
Superintendent David Walker said the RSU 34 board will meet tonight to validate the vote before sending each member town an assessment for its share of the total budget.
