PORTLAND, Maine — Heavy rains have forced the closure of most of Maine’s clam flats.

The Department of Marine Resources has banned most shellfish harvesting from Cape Neddick in York County all the way to the Maine-Canadian border because of concerns about pollution from runoff due to the heavy rains.

During the closure, officials say it is illegal to harvest clams, quahogs, oysters and mussels in the affected area.
