BANGOR, Maine — A Greenbush man charged with robbing two banks less than two weeks apart was indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury for allegedly having 30 pounds of marijuana mailed to himself at the Old Town post office from Texas, and for the Bangor robbery.

Troy M. Gay, aka Troy Niles, 21, was indicted in the May 7 robbery of the Bank of America branch on Union Street and for attempted unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday on those charges in Penobscot County Superior Court.

Gay also has been charged, but not yet indicted, in connection with the April 27 robbery of the Bangor Savings Bank branch in Howland.

Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County, said Monday he expected Gay would be indicted on the Howland robbery charge within the next few months.

Gay remains at Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail set the day after the Bangor bank robbery at $20,000 cash or $100,000 surety.

He used similar methods in both robberies, according to court documents. Gay allegedly entered both banks shortly after 9 a.m. when they opened for business. He also allegedly was seen by witnesses around the banks the day before each robbery.

Gay walked up to tellers in each bank, according to a story previously published in the Bangor Daily News, and demanded money. He did not brandish a weapon at either location or hand a note to bank employees. At the Bangor bank, Gay reportedly thanked a teller and, as he left, said, “Just want you to know there was no gun involved.”

He took $3,098 in the Howland robbery, according to court documents. The amount taken in the Bangor robbery has not been disclosed, but investigators found a large amount of cash buried behind Gay’s friend’s house in Old Town.

If convicted, Gay faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 for each robbery and the drug charge.
