STANDISH, Maine – They’ve finally got a state softball championship to add to all those gold basketballs.

Woodland High School, which has been a basketball powerhouse over the years, won its first Class D state softball title Saturday, pounding out eight runs on 13 hits and getting a dynamite pitching performance from junior righthander Shelby Bassett for an 8-2 victory over Buckfield at Saint Joseph’s College.

Coach Rick Pullen’s team finishes the season 17-4 and Buckfield 14-4.

Bassett got it done with both the bat and glove, as she led Woodland’s offensive onslaught with three singles, two runs batted in and a run scored.

She had 10 strikeouts in the circle while scattering two runs on two hits, taking a no-hitter into the sixth.

The Dragons jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead behind three hits and two Buckfield errors. Molly White stroked a one-out double to right field while Julia Nicholas plated her with an RBI single up the middle.

Nicholas would score on an error while Taylor Cochran cranked an RBI double to left-center.

Buckfield would get two back in the bottom of the third, thanks to two walks, a double-steal and a wild pitch.

But the Dragons put it away with a three-run uprising in the fourth, highlighted by Bassett’s two-run single and an RBI base hit by White.

Woodland tacked on another in the seventh, with Christine Boomer singling and scoring on an error.

Brittany Wiley broke up Bassett’s no-hit bid with a bunt single in the sixth while Abby Bragg doubled in the seventh for the Bucks.
