Layoffs for 41 workers at Bath Iron Works

The Associated Press

BATH, Maine — Bath Iron Works has notified its largest union of another 41 layoffs, part of a trend that will continue for four to six months.

Spokesman Jim DeMartini said Thursday the layoffs go into effect on July 2 for 16 pipefitters and 25 welders. They follow announcements of 58 layoffs on June 5 and 67 layoffs on June 1.

Bath Iron Works had long warned workers of a period of temporary layoffs as the shipyard transitions to the Navy’s stealthy next-generation destroyer. The shipyard anticipates that its work force will stabilize as work on the new destroyer ramps up.
