What is George H.W. Bush’s legacy?

To celebrate his 85th birthday on Friday, former President George H.W. Bush, with a grin on his face, jumped out of an airplane with a parachute team. The elder Bush, described by many in Maine who have met him as modest, gentlemanly and down-to-earth, has been out of the White House for 16 years. For what policies or decisions will he be remembered in the his-tory books? The Gulf War, in which Saddam Hussein’s forces were driven out of Kuwait? Not responding to the recession of 1991 with enough vigor? Continuing President Reagan’s poli-cies? Breaking his “read my lips” pledge and raising taxes, even though he knew it would hurt his re-election bid? Dan Quayle?
