Warren man killed in motorcycle crash in Camden

By Sharon Kiley Mack, BDN Staff

CAMDEN, Maine — A Warren man was killed Saturday evening when the motorcycle he was driving left the Melvin Heights Road and slammed into a utility pole.

The victim was identified by the Maine State Police Trooper Jeremy Wesbrock as Shawn Sturdee, 44.

The incident began shortly before 7:45 p.m. when Camden Police Officer Allen Weaver saw Sturdee operating at a high rate of speed on Mechanic Street. Weaver attempted to turn his cruiser around to pursue Sturdee, but Weaver lost sight of the motorcycle after it turned onto Melvin Heights Road.

When he caught up with it moments later, the bike had already crashed near a fork in the road, having missed one utility pole and struck a second. The bike also sheared off a sign post. Sturdee’s body was found in a grassy area along the roadway.

Wesbrock said that Sturdee, who was not wearing a helmet, died of head and internal injuries.

Maine State Police took responsibility for investigating the scene because Camden police were involved in the chase. A reconstruction team worked at the scene for several hours Saturday night, forcing the closure of several roads in the area.
