AUGUSTA, Maine — An 8-year-old boy who saved the life of his lobsterman grandfather after he was pulled overboard by a trap line is being honored by the Maine Legislature.

Mathew Drisko of Columbia Falls received a standing ovation in the House of Representatives on Thursday after his late-May heroics off the Down East coast were chronicled. After his grandfather was pulled overboard, Mathew reached over and tied a lifejacket around the older man. For the next half-hour, the boy kept the boat close by until he could signal another boat for assistance.

Mathew, who was in the House gallery Thursday, was praised for his cool head in manning the boat and getting help. His father, Lester Drisko, also a lobsterman, said Mathew is familiar with boats because he’s been on them “since he could walk.”
