Pop punk band plays to closet fans

Ah, band names. How does one decide on the name for your band? Should it have some special meaning? A hidden message? Should it be purposely tough-sounding, or should it just be funny and cool?

The Bangor-based pop punk band A Good Night Sound Rush grappled with this decision just this week.

“I don’t know. We might change it. It’s not set in stone,” said Ben Nadeau, lead singer for the group. “We like the name, but I don’t know. There’s always something that, once you’ve picked a name, you like more.”

Mere hours after I sat down with Nadeau and drummer Brian Keezer to chat about the music that they and guitarists Justin Kandel and Buddy Suddy and bass player Matt Humphrey make, they decided to change the name of their band. So, let me be the first one with the big scoop: A Good Night Sound Rush exists no longer. La-dies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you Legend Had It.

Regardless of the name change, Legend Had It still make happy, insanely catchy pop punk — the old-school kind. Well, old school as in late 1990s, early 2000s. The solid gold pop hooks and big, crunchy punk riffs that were made by bands such as Blink-182, a New Found Glory and Green Day, before they got all epic and stuff.

“I think a lot of people are closet pop punk fans,” said Keezer. “They’ll listen to metal and hardcore and go to all the shows, but secretly they love pop punk. I think people think it’s kind of wimpy or something to like it, but it’s not. It’s fun. Who cares?”

Considering the fact that Legend Had It plays a lot of shows with a lot of really heavy local bands, and thus far the band members have not been beaten to death by angry metalheads, Keezer’s theory is probably correct. An example is the show tonight at the Kave in Bucksport, where the band is playing with Bury Your Dead, Sworn Enemy, For The Fallen Dreams, Abacabb and Interrogator.

There’s also the fact that two of the members of the band, Humphrey and Suddy, were in local metal bands Arcaina and Jules Verne before joining Legend Had It. Keezer was in the band The Symmetry, also a pop punk band. Sometimes, it’s not so much about a particular genre or image, and more about just playing music with your friends.

“I think this band is different from all the other ones we’ve been in, because we’re all friends,” said Keezer. “We all get along really well, and we’re all pretty much on the same page, musically. It’s finally gelled.”

In two weeks Legend Had It will travel to a recording studio in Massachusetts, to spend a few days laying down a six-song EP — with four new songs, as well as re-recorded versions of the two songs available on the band’s MySpace, www.myspace.com/agoodnightsoundrush. That URL will soon change, of course, with the name change.

“We’d love to set up some short tours of the East Coast in the next year or so,” said Nadeau. “It’s hard to get the money together to do it. We’d all quit our jobs and do this full time, if we could, but I don’t think anyone is quite there yet.”

Anyway, the members of Legend Had It are more concerned right now with supporting the scene here in Bangor. Keezer worked with local musician and promoter Myke Billings to set up Skate Against Drugs, a concert and skateboarding competition last month held at the skate park at Bass Park.

“It’s hard to find a place that’s respectable that kids respect to have shows at,” said Keezer. “Ofelia’s and the Brick Church and the Underground all closed down. It’s up to us to find places to do it. The Kave is amazing. I’d like to see the metal and punk scene work more with the jam bands and stuff to have shows together. There are a lot of unexplored possibilities.”

Legend Had It, the band formerly known as A Good Night Sound Rush, will play tonight with Bury Your Dead, Sworn Enemy, For The Fallen Dreams, Abacabb and Interrogator at the Kave in Bucksport. Doors open at 6 p.m. and admission is $10. For information, visit www.myspace.com/thekave.
