PORTLAND, Maine — A Massachusetts man convicted of being drunk in a fatal boating accident on a western Maine lake has settled wrongful death lawsuits with the families of the two victims.

Robert LaPointe, 40, and his father, George LaPointe, reached an agreement Monday with the families of Suzanne Groetzinger of Berwick and Terry Raye Trott of Harrison.

Groetzinger and Trott were killed when their small boat was run over in August 2007 by LaPointe’s 32-foot high-speed powerboat on Long Lake in Harrison.

The parties agreed to keep the settlement amount confidential.

LaPointe was sentenced last year to 3 1/2 years in prison following his conviction on two counts of aggravated operating under the influence. Jurors deadlocked on charges of manslaughter and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
