YARMOUTH – Barbara Speirs Pendleton, 74, of Yarmouth and Islesboro, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 30, 2009, at her home. Born Nov. 24, 1934, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Douglas and Mary Speirs. Barbara graduated with honors from McKinley High School in June 1953 and was a member of National Honor Society. She attended Strayer College. She met her husband, Bernard Pendleton, while spending a summer on the island of Islesboro. After marriage, the couple lived in Washington, D.C., where they both worked for the U.S. General Accounting Office. In 1958 they moved to Islesboro, where Barbara spent her time raising and caring for her family. She contributed to the community as a volunteer for the Islesboro school and First Baptist Church. Barbara and Bernard retired to Melbourne, Fla., in 1984. After Bernard’s death in 1993 she returned to Maine to be closer to her daughters. Barbara worked in Yarmouth Middle School cafeteria, where she made many friends and enjoyed the children’s antics, which she loved to share with others. She was a bird watcher, loved reading, movies and spending time with her family. Many have said that Barbara was one of the nicest people they knew. She will be remembered fondly and missed by all. She is survived by two daughters, Donna Pendleton of Portland and Bonnie Pendleton of North Yarmouth; stepson, Roger Pendleton of Bangor; three grandsons, Trevor, Brent and Gabe; two nephews, Kenneth and Carleton; a niece, Carli; and great-grandson, Xavier. A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at Maple Grove Cemetery, Islesboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army, P.O.
