PORTLAND, Maine — The family of an 18-year-old Portland murder victim has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the alleged killer and is seeking a court order that would essentially freeze his assets.

The Portland Press Herald said the suit by the family of Zoe Sarnacki was filed Wednesday in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Sarnacki’s body was found on Memorial Day in the apartment of 27-year-old Chad Gurney, who’s accused of killing her and setting fire to the dwelling.

The family’s lawyer, Dan Lilley said in the suit that Gurney has been living off a personal injury settlement valued at more than $1 million. The suit asks that a judge attach up to $1.5 million of his assets to prevent him from diverting or concealing funds.
